Today was finally the day: this year’s bikepacking tour began. However, I started with very mixed feelings, as my eye problems unfortunately became much worse again yesterday. I hope they will settle down soon.

The journey by TGV from Strasbourg to Tours was pleasant, hassle-free, and punctual to the minute. What a difference compared to Deutsche Bahn!

After leaving Tours, the route initially follows the Cher and Loire rivers along cycle paths and quiet roads. Villandry, with its enchanting castle, lies directly on the route and is a must-see. Since I have already visited the castle, I decided to skip it this time. The route passes through many charming towns, and I especially liked Bréhémont.

From Candes-Saint-Martin, you ride on the road for a while, but traffic was not an issue today. This is also where the impressive cave dwellings begin. Many villages are built directly into the rock, and Parnay is a particular gem in this regard.

Saumur also made a very pleasant impression, but I rode straight through because I wanted to reach my destination. After that, the route becomes somewhat hilly as it winds through the countryside, allowing you to accumulate a few more meters of elevation. My first great—and very hot—stage came to an end at the Huttopia Saumur campsite.
